Poetic Devices Used Within My Poems:
Rhyme – I used rhyme at the end of each line for my first two poems. They both had a rhyme scheme that consisted of AA, BB, CC, etc. This rhyming technique at the end of each line allowed the poems to flow and connected each line to the previous.
Metaphor – Metaphors were used within my second and third poems. Within the second poem, my metaphor was extended throughout the entire length of the story/poem. I used the flower bud as a metaphor comparing it to a human girl and her struggle to see her own inner beauty. Within my third poem, I used a metaphor by comparing her radiance to the sun showing that she shines so brightly. Both of these examples added depth and a more interesting aspect to my poems.
Repetition – The repetition of words was used a couple of times in my poems and my main purpose for this was just to emphasize what I was saying and give it a more powerful meaning.
Alliteration – There were a few instances in my poems where alliteration was put to use and I repeated the first letter of the words. This device helped to make the poems more interesting and to make the message stick in the reader’s head.
Inversion – Some of the phrases in my poems were inverted, giving them a more artistic feel in the writing style. This also contributed to my poems by emphasizing certain points.
Simile – A simile was used in my third poem comparing the fact that the girl’s inner beauty was always there to the fact that the sky and the sun are always there as well. Making this comparison helps the line to make more sense to the reader as they are able to relate it to something.
Hyperbole – I used a hyperbole in my third poem when I exaggerated by saying “grotesque-looking figure”. This was necessary in order to really get the point across about how different this girl viewed herself compared to how she truly was.
Mood – I decided to underline mood within each of my poems, as I believe that mood was displayed within each one. They all gave off a different mood. The first was very hopeful and inspiring, the second was at first very miserable and lonely, but then became happier and more joyous towards the end, and the third was similar to the second in that it started dark and dreary but became more inspiring at the end of the piece. Having these moods makes it easier for the reader to connect to the poems and experience the story.
Personification – Personification was exemplified at many points throughout my second poem. Through my metaphor I also made the flower bud come to life and gave it person-like qualities as it had emotions, thoughts, and feelings. Using this technique made this poem more interesting and relatable by giving that flower the same qualities as a human being.
