My Final Thoughts ...
The central theme that my entire poetry portfolio revolves around is body image and inner beauty. I feel as though in today’s society, women and girls are put under such a huge amount of pressure to look a certain way and appear as what society considers “beautiful”. Meanwhile, it is not what’s on the outside that matters. The most important quality to a person is their inner beauty and who they are on the inside. I thought that because of this issue in society, the way people perceive their body image and ignore their inner beauty would be an interesting topic to write and analyze poetry about.
The component of this assignment that enjoyed the most was actually getting to write my own poetry. It was a really interesting experience to be able to write freely and artistically with very little structure or guidelines. I was able to express my thoughts and emotions on the paper and it was quite enjoyable. However, the aspect of this assignment that I enjoyed the least was analyzing the other poetry. I feel this way because I enjoy being able to write the poems myself and I do not enjoy looking deeper into other pieces and having to explain the meaning behind them. I find this a lot easier to do when the poem has come straight from my mind and not another writer’s.
Throughout the entirety of this poetry portfolio assignment, I experienced many positive points and many negative points as well. Overall however, I am still quite satisfied with my final product. This is because I feel as though all of my poems, my analyses, and the overall execution of my website display my theme of body image/inner beauty very effectively. My set up is very clear and I believe that everything fits really well together. The piece that I like the most out of my entire portfolio is my second poem “A Bloomless Belle”. This is because when I wrote this poem, the words flowed very well from my mind to the paper and I feel as though it is the most unique of my poems in the way that I used the extended metaphor and personification devices. I do believe that my work will appeal to my audience and peers as it is an interesting issue and topic to read about and the feelings and moods that I have portrayed throughout my writing make it easy for readers to relate and empathize. If I were given the opportunity to go back and do this assignment again, I would not want to make many changes. I am very happy with how it turned out, but if I were to make one change I may try a Shakespearean Sonnet poem just to try something different and see how that type of poem would fit in with my theme. Lastly, a final goal that I would like to set for myself for the next writing task in this course would be to make myself a schedule and break the assignment down. I will set myself personal deadlines for each component of the assignment and strive to achieve those goals. This will help me to stay on track and will reduce the amount of stress that I experience as I did with this assignment because I had multiple things due on top of this assignment throughout the week. In conclusion, I am very happy with how my poetry portfolio turned out, but next time I would make some changes in how I completed the assignment.
